On Rememberance Day 1999, singer Terry Kelly was in a drugstore in Dartmouth, NS. At 10:55am, an announcement came over the store's PA asking customers who would still be on the premises at 11:00am to give two minutes of silence in respect to the veterans who have sacrificed so much for us.
Terry was impressed with the store's leadership role in adopting the Legion's "two minutes of silence" initiative. He felt that the store's contribution of educating the public to the importance of remembering was commendable.
When 11:00 arrived, an announcement was again made asking for the "two minutes of silence" to commence. All customers, with the exception of a man who was accompanied by his young child, showed their respect.
Terry's anger towards the father for trying to engage the store's clerk in conversation and for setting a bad example for his child was later channeled into "A Pittance of Time". Terry later recorded it included it on his full-length music CD, "The Power of the Dream".
A Pittance in Time - Terry Kelly
Hi Teena, I've got this same video to post tomorrow! My brother played it to me some time ago and I've been saving it for Remembrance Day. Good choice.
ReplyDeleteHi Teena,
ReplyDeleteAt 11 this morning my son was about play cricket when the two teams lined up opposite each other, took their hats off and bowed their heads. These guys are playing in the U12s. With my daughter holding one hand and my youngest son holding the other, it was a very moving experience. I ah to explain it to the two little ones but they appreciated it afterwards.
I am glad you put Terry up too. I have the proper copies here from Terry, including the documentary.
ReplyDeleteHere is one of Terry's official sites: http://www.terry-kelly.com/introduction.htm
I got your messege about the house:
I didn't even know those were there.
Really changes the whole area there then.
I noticed the big building going in at lakeshore and Bathurst by the armouries too!
Some of my University buddies lived near Straughn and King. It is amazing how that area and right into Parkdale is getting such a revitalization!
I am so glad. I was worried for a while that Toronto would lose its inner population. People have made great choices with condos and lofts and brownstones to awaken the inner city!
You guys were really close to the Crowbar that night! Wow!
I will be sure to let you know if we are celebrating with the band in your area!
Lovely tribute! Brought tears to my eyes. Makes it real! Thanks for sharing! :)
ReplyDeleteWonderful tribute. It's so sad how some people won't even pause for two minutes to pay respect to those who sacrificed everything for our freedoms.
ReplyDeleteRemembrance Day is very special to us because my husband is an army officer in the Canadian Forces. We will be attending a ceremony tomorrow at one of the Commonwealth War Graves here in Bavaria. It should be a very touching ceremony.
Thanks for the comment on my Remembrance Day post.
It is a beautiful tribute - I like the song a lot :) It is growing on me this weekend...
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing.
I heard this song yesterday...wonderful!
ReplyDeleteIt's my first time hearing it but I really enjoyed it. I haven't missed going to a cenotaph as long back as I remember.
ReplyDeleteWow! This was a great tribute. That video is just great! Thank you for sharing that.

That is beautiful, Teena. And thank you for stopping by. You have a true sense of how to build a community.
ReplyDeleteTeena, I'm going to email this permalink to everyone I know. Truly stunning. I'm still wiping away the tears.
ReplyDeleteThanks for that. I don't think of myself as a vet, even though I am...12 years in fact.
Again, stunning.
