Did your high school dreams come true?

It's been 30 years since I graduated from high school ... my high school reunion was a couple weeks ago.

It's hard to believe it's been 30 years! 20 years maybe, but not 30!

I went to high school in Sydney, Nova Scotia ... about 1800km from here. I don't have any family there anymore and it's a distance just for a weekend ... and I didn't go.

I hadn't really kept in touch with anyone from high school so it's been fun getting to know many of them again through Facebook.

I was looking at my yearbook from the year I graduated today. Here I am ...

I did go to the university I said I going to go to and in my first year I took the right courses towards being a social worker. But I wasn't digging them as much as I should have.

I switched my focus my second year to English courses when I decided I wanted to be a high school English teacher.

So I never became a "wonderful social worker".

I finished my three year B.A. program. I got accepted into a B.Ed. (teachers) program ... at that time it only took a year to do.

I felt I needed a break, though, so I decided I would put off the B.Ed. program 'til the following year. I spent most of the year working as a bartender in a hotel lounge, which I enjoyed but knew I didn't want to do it forever.

At that time, jobs for teachers were scarce so I figured I would take a year long secretarial program so I'd have a job to fall back on just in case ... after I got my B.Ed. degree and became a teacher.

I finished the secretarial program and got a job for the summer using my new skills. I still had intentions of going back to do the B.Ed. in the fall.

But then I started enjoying getting pay cheques from my first "real" job ... and I liked it!

Needless to say, I never did go back and do the B.Ed. degree. And you know what? I'm okay with that. I can't imagine myself as a high school teacher.

But ironically, I am a teacher of sorts. Over the years, I've taken tons of training courses and I teach people about retirement planning and I really enjoy it.
