Movie theatres ban cell phones during a movie

As you know, I love going to the movies ... sitting in the dark, getting caught up in the story on the big screen in front of me.

But there's nothing worse than people who use their cell phones during the movie, whether they are having a conversation or texting.

Last year, I was at a movie with friends when a guy in front of us pulled out his cell phone and started texting. I leaned over and asked him to put it away and he got rude about it. Dude, the glare from your phone is very distracting!

Wehrenberg Theatres, a theatre chain in the States, are taking a stand by banning texting and talking during movies as of September 15. If you are caught, you will be asked to leave and will receive no refund.

"We felt it was time to draw the line in the sand and say this is our policy, come in and enjoy a film, turn off that cell phone," said Bill Menke, Executive Vice President of Wehrenberg Theatres.

The movie chain has signs at the entrance to every theater to remind guests that if they're caught using a cell phone inside, they will be asked to leave without a refund.

For some, the new rule is nothing special.

"For me it's not a big deal because I don't really use my cell phone during the movie. But I think it's a good idea," said moviegoer Steve Carlsen.

For others, it's the best thing since the concession stand.

"I think it's a great thing," said movie fan Linda Turner. "You don't need to be talking on your phone if you're watching a movie."

Menke says the reaction to the new rule has been overwhelmingly positive.

"We've been met with applause. A few standing ovations believe it or not."

To me, it's a no-brainer. Talking on a cell phone during a movie is rude ... take it outside, Dude! Do you really need to text right now?  I hope more theatres implement this policy.
