When Gord and I arrived in St. John's this morning, we were exhausted and hungry and stopped at Talamh an Éisc for breakfast.
Its sign says it's a 24 hour restaurant and the inside is a pub ... actually it's one of three pubs that are connected. There was a fella at the bar having a beer.
I ordered the Celtic Breakfast with ham. It was good, though I wasn't crazy about the home fries.
Gord was more adventurous and ordered the Newfoundlander. He enjoyed it. Toutons, we discovered, are leftover dough that are then fried.
Our server was very friendly ... it was a great way to start our visit to St. John's (though we were only spending a day there)!
August 2 update: We had breakfast there again this morning. Gord had codcakes and said they were good.

What's a toutonand what's a codcake?
We didn't know what touton was 'til Sunday either. Basically it's leftover dough that's fried.
With a fishcake, you mix shredded codfish, mashed potatoes, onions and spices and shape it into a hockey puck, then fry it. My mother used to make them for supper ... I wasn't a fan.
