Canon PowerShot SX270 HS

I take a lot of pictures!

In September 2009, I bought a Canon PowerShot SX120 IS (a point-and-shoot with a 10X zoom). It was always in my purse and I used it a lot. The flash stopped working and I took it in to be repaired in February 2012.  I was told that it was too old and not worth fixing so I would get a replacement instead (I had bought the warranty), either the updated PowerShot or another camera of the same value or less.  I got a Nikon Coolpix S8200 (with a 14X zoom) instead ... I liked it but missed the Canon. Gord surprised me with the updated Canon PowerShot SX150 IS (with a 12X zoom) in August 2012.

I took the Nikon Coolpix S8200 to Mont Tremblant this past New Years and took it up on the mountain.  As I was taking pictures, the lens stopped going in.  It was -25C and apparently it was too cold for it (duh!).  I later read that it shouldn't be in temperatures less than 0C.  So it was toast.

I still have my Nikon D5100 that I bought in August 2011.  I have a couple lenses for it ... the longest zooms to 300mm.  I'd like to get one with a longer zoom but they are huge, heavy and expensive ($1199+ for a lens than zooms to 500mm).  This camera is great when we go out with the intention of taking photographs rather than just pictures.

I wanted an in-between camera so bought a Nikon CoolPix P510 in January ...  I love it and use it a lot.  It has a 42X zoom (which equals a 1000mm lens) and a lot of the features of my D5100 so there was little learning curve.

What I discovered with the Canon PowerShot SX150 IS is that no matter how fresh or high quality the batteries are, it takes forever for the flash to "recharge".  I always have it in my purse and it's annoying when I want to take pictures and need to wait for the flash.

This week Gord discovered his Canon PowerShot SX120 IS had spots on the lens that wouldn't come off so needed a new point-and-shoot.  That was incentive enough for me to get a new one too.  We both got a Canon PowerShot SX270 HS (it was on sale).  Though it's small (it can fit in my pocket), it has a 20X zoom.  I can't wait to use it and see how it performs!

We'll keep the Canon PowerShot SX150 IS as a back-up.

  1. I'm not sure which model I have, but I have a Canon PowerShot and I love it. I was sick of bringing the big, bulky camera with me on vacations, so I down-sized.
