Necropolis Cemetery, Toronto, ON

Across the street from Riverdale Farm is the Necropolis Cemetery.  Gord and I spent some time wandering around there this afternoon.

Necropolis Cemetery is a historic cemetery in Toronto, located on the west side of the Don Valley near Riverdale Farm. Opened in 1850 to replace "Strangers' Burying Ground" (or Potter's Field), the cemetery is the resting place for many dead Torontonians.  The cemetery contains the war graves of 34 Commonwealth service personnel, 29 from World War I and five from World War II. The cemetery has over 50,000 bodies and a crematorium was built in 1933.

We went inside the chapel.

Then we walked around the grounds ... I find old graveyards fascinating.

There are lots older graves and newer graves ... grander gravestones and simple gravestones.
