Do you finish a book no matter what?

I love to read!

But I'm not one of those who HAS to finish a book.  There are too many books out there to keep reading one that I'm not digging.  Next!

Of Goodreads' Top Five Most Abandoned Books, I read Fifty Shades of Grey because I wanted to see what all the fuss was about ... the first one was enough and I have no immediate plans to read the others.  I did abandon Eat, Pray, Love for exactly the reason listed below ... I found the main character too whiny and self-obsessed.  I haven't read the other three.  I haven't read any of the Top Five Most Abandoned Classics.

I usually know quickly into a book whether I'm going to enjoy it or not (the writing style or subject matter) but I keep going a little further to give it a chance.  I usually give up within the first 50 pages (I'm part of the 15.8% crowd listed below).  When I give up on a book, I usually skip to the end to see how it ended.

  1. The first 100 pages of The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo are awful - confusing, difficult to read, and boring. I can see why it would be on the list. But if you can get past those first 100 pages, it is a great read. I almost abandoned it, but glad I didn't.

  2. Nope - if I don't get hooked in the first chapter, I read no further.

  3. I have major book commitment... but I finished the entire Fifty Shades series. Yes, I'm slightly embarrassed.

  4. So I USED to be a fanatic about finishing every book I read, but lately I could not be bothered. There is SO much out there that I want to read, if I have to struggle to read a book then I put it away. I still think I try to hard to get through books, but I WILL put one down. I did not finish the Casual Vacancy, I HATED Eat Pray Love but I think I finished it and I DID finish Atlas Shrugged - and I loved it!

  5. I usually finish what I start. But last week I finally relented and gave up on a book.

  6. I usually know within the first couple of chapters how I'm going to feel about a book and yes will abandon it if it not appealing to me. With that said, I will on occasion give books a second chance if the mood strikes. Sometimes I have to be in the right frame of mind to appreciate certain books, and stories.
