Canada's largest collection of original War of 1812 buildings and 1813 battle site. Located in the heart of downtown Toronto, Fort York is open year-round and offers tours, exhibits, period settings and seasonal demonstrations. During the summer months, the site comes alive with the colour and pageantry of the Fort York Guard. Fort York also provides a wide variety of education programmes for groups of all ages.
To get in and out of the Fort, you go through the canteen where you can buy souvenirs.
I got there just in time for the 2pm tour and "Private" Mike was our guide. He gave us lots of information about the history of the fort and the War of 1812.
We started off in the Soldiers' Barracks (1815). Families and single soldiers shared these barracks.
"Family" quarters |
Then we headed to the Officers' Brick Barracks and Mess Establishment (1815).
They were cooking and baking today ... and giving out samples |
The tour was over and I headed to the No. 2 (Centre) Blockhouse (1813).
I checked out the No. 1 (East) Blockhouse (1813).
I sat on the old wall for a while.
Then I wandered over to the cannons.
Here's the well and well house (1802, 2007).
