Book ~ "Terry & Me: The Inside Story of Terry Fox's Marathon of Hope" (2023) Bill Vigars and Ian Harvey

From Goodreads ~ There has never been a Canadian quite like Terry Fox and there’s never been a story quite like The Marathon of Hope.

A twenty-two-year-old cancer survivor and amputee, Terry set out from St. John’s, Newfoundland, in April 1980, aiming to run across Canada to raise money for cancer research. His first months on the road in Atlantic Canada and Quebec were not only physically taxing - he ran the equivalent of a marathon a day - but frustrating as Canadians were slow to recognize and support his endeavor.

That all changed when he met a young man named Bill Vigars, who on behalf of the Canadian Cancer Society led a campaign to ensure that every person in Canada knew the story of this outstanding young man. Vigars was by Fox’s side through all the highs and lows until the tragic end of his journey in Thunder Bay. A recurrence of his cancer cut short Terry’s dream and, soon, his life.

Now, for the first time, Vigars tells the inside story of the Marathon of Hope - the logistical nightmares, boardroom battles and moments of pure magic - while giving us a fresh, insightful portrait of one of the greatest Canadians who ever lived.

I've read a few books about Terry Fox and was a volunteer with our local Terry Fox Run. Bill Vigars, who passed away a few weeks ago, worked for the Canadian Cancer Society in Ontario and became Terry's public relations officer just before he entered Ontario. Bill's goal was to help raise awareness of what Terry was doing, therefore raising funds for cancer research. They spent a lot of time together and became friends. It was interesting to get a more personal and up-close account of his run from someone so close to him and still meant a lot to him all these years later.

Terry was an ordinary young man living in Port Coquitlam, BC. He was athletic and enjoyed running and basketball. When he was 19, they discovered he had a cancerous tumour and his right leg was amputated at the knee. With an artificial leg, he began running again and played wheelchair basketball.

On April 12, 1980, Terry began the Marathon of Hope, a cross-country run to raise money for cancer research. He hoped to raise one dollar from each of Canada's 24 million people. He began in St. John's, NF, in April and ran the equivalent of a full marathon every day. On September 1, 1980, he was forced to end his run outside Thunder Bay because the cancer had spread to his lungs. He headed home to BC immediately to begin treatment and passed away in June 1981.

One of Terry's earliest supporters was Isadore Sharp, founder of the Four Seasons Hotels, who proposed an annual fundraising run in Terry's name. Terry agreed but insisted that the runs be non-competitive.  The first Terry Fox Run was on on September 13, 1981 ... over 300,000 people took part and raised $3.5 million.  The Run has grown to involve millions of participants in over 60 countries and is now the world's largest one-day fundraiser for cancer research ... almost a billion dollars has been raised.

In the middle of the book, there were 15 pages of pictures, some I've never seen before. One major criticism of the book is there were an appalling amount of typos and grammatical errors in this book ... whoever signed off on it at the publisher should be fired.

Knitted Twisted Hat

I knitted another twisted hat. It’s a fun and easy pattern once you get into the repetitive groove. I used Caron Anniversary Cake and the colour is Pebbled Path.

I found the pattern here.

I converted the pattern because the yarn is thicker than the pattern. I used 6.5 needles and 6 ply yarn.

Hat is worked in the round on double pointed needles or circular needles.

Cast on 84 stitches. Place marker for beginning of round.

Ribbing Round:
[K1 through the back loop, p1] around. Repeat ribbing round for 8 rounds..

Round 1: Change to larger needles and knit.
Round 2: [K2, yo, k2, k2tog] around.
Repeat round 2 for 30 rounds.

Shape Crown
  • Decrease round 1: [K2tog, yo, k2, k2tog] repeat
  • Next round: [K1, yo, k2, k2tog] repeat
  • Decrease round 2: [K1, yo, k2tog k2tog] repeat
  • Next round: [K1, yo, k1, k2tog] repeat
  • Decrease round 3: [K2, k2tog] repeat
  • Decrease round 4: [K1, k2tog] repeat
  • Decrease round 5: [K2tog] repeat
Cut yarn, leaving a long tail. Thread yarn through remaining sts and pull to gather. Secure end. Weave in ends.

ABBREVIATIONS
k = knit
k2tog = knit 2 sts together
p = purl
St st = Stockinette stitch
st(s) = stitch(es)
yo = yarn over

Garter Stitch Scarf

I finished knitting a scarf. I cast on 25 stitches on a 5mm needles and the pattern is garter stitch.

I used a skein of Loops & Threads Sweet Snuggles Lite super bulky (#6) and the colour is costal dot. It’s about 6 feet long and warm and snuggly.

Book ~ "Damn Glad to Meet You: My Seven Decades in the Hollywood Trenches" (2024) Tim Matheson

From Goodreads ~ For the past seven decades, Tim Matheson has been an on-screen favorite in Hollywood. In his debut memoir, Tim takes fans behind-the-scenes of his illustrious career, and reveals what it was like to learn from and work alongside the greats, including Lucille Ball, Dick Van Dyke, Steven Spielberg, and Aaron Sorkin. Tim also talks about how he transitioned from acting to directing, the role in The West Wing that nabbed him two Emmy nominations–and so much more.

Filled to the brim with both riveting stories of the ever-changing entertainment industry and illuminating insight via “film school boot camp” sidebars, readers everywhere are going to be “damn glad” they read this fascinating memoir.

I know Tim Matheson as Otter in Animal House, a movie I've seen about a million times, and the older sad dude in the Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle. I like reading bios/memoirs and getting the behind-the-scenes scoops. I wasn't sure how interesting I would find this book or Matheson's life since I don't have a lot of exposure to him. Surprisingly I enjoyed it than I thought I would.

Matheson starts off in the beginning with his childhood (alcoholic parents, broken family and discovering acting at a young age) and brings us up-to-date with what he's doing today (happily married for the third time and in a Netflix series). He's been in many movies and shows, which I didn't know as they aren't shows I watch or have watched.

I liked the writing style ... it was conversational as if he was telling his story to you in person over a cup of coffee or glass of wine. It's fairly high level with just enough detail. I liked his honesty and humor ... he doesn't shy away from the fact that it sounds like he was a slimy dog when he was younger (his second marriage and becoming a father seemed to have settled him down) but I still found him likeable (he sounds like a nice guy). It was interesting to read about his relationships with others in and out of show business and how he always had to keep reinventing himself. I wish there had been photos scattered throughout the book. As a head's up, there is swearing.

Snack Pack, Comedy is Art Festival, The Theatre Centre, Toronto, ON

I volunteered tonight at the Friday Night Snack Pack, part of the Comedy is Art Festival at The Theatre Centre. I was able to watch the show, which was funny.

Hosted by Ben Sosa-Wright, tonight’s performance featured Bitty-Bat and Gender? I Hardly Know Them.

Bitty-Bat is a unique creature - not quite a vampire, not quite a bat and not quite sure what you’re doing in her cave. Driven instinctively to charm and intimidate, she lures the audience deeper into her world, only to be interrupted by a strange know-it-all voice interfering with her daily rituals. Discover Bitty-Bat in this ridiculous physical comedy that will delight and baffle.

Gender? I Hardly Know Them brings you fast-paced, joyfully provocative queer sketch straight from the heart of the God-fearing, gun-toting, beef-loving Alberta prairies. Featuring: Elena Belyea and Syd Campbell.

"Something Rotten!", Stratford Festival, Stratford, ON

Gord and I saw Something Rotten! at the Festival Theatre (part of the Stratford Festival) this afternoon.

The Bottom brothers, two struggling playwrights in Renaissance London, need a hit. That’s easier said than done when your chief competition is local rock star William Shakespeare. The Bottom brothers’ plan: write the world’s first musical! This rollicking song-and-dance extravaganza, nominated for ten Tony Awards during its smash Broadway run, sends up the Bard and Broadway and everything in between. Best of all, it can be enjoyed without CliffsNotes!

I'm not a fan of Shakespeare so hadn't been interested in seeing this. My friend, LeeAnn, has seen it many times and kept bugging me to see it. So we finally did ... and I'm glad we did.  It was very funny and clever. There was lots of singing and dancing. The performers were very good and none were weak.

Chuck’s Roadhouse Bar and Grill, Stratford, ON

Gord and I had lunch today at Chuck’s Roadhouse in Stratford … apparently it just opened a couple months ago.

Gord had a smoked meat sandwich and upgraded his fries to onion rings. His was good.

I had the full rack of ribs special and upgraded my fries to mashed potatoes. The potatoes were good but cold and many of my ribs were burnt and dry. I wouldn’t get it again. When the manager asked how my meal was, I was honest and he gave me a $5 Chucks Buck that expires in December, which I won’t be able to use because we won’t be back until next year’s Stratford Festival (but it was nice he offered).

It's a Vibe, Comedy is Art Festival, The Theatre Centre, Toronto, ON

I spent this evening volunteering at the Comedy is Art Festival at The Theatre Centre

It’s A Vibe - Hosted by Bougie B Bougé, tonight’s performance features: Anto Chan, Bougie B Bougé, Daphney Joseph, Darren Leo, Faiza Kulle, Rae Gallimore and Yaw Attuah.

The opening night lineup is stacked with a delightful group of hilarious stand up comics whose incisive observations will make having left your place to come see a show well worth your while.

Henriette, my fellow volunteer, and I were able to watch the show, which was funny.

KC's tree, Trinity Bellwoods Park, Toronto, ON

I visited KC's tree at Trinity Bellwoods Park.

It's been a couple weeks since I was last there and the leaves at the top had just started to change colour so I was concerned that there wouldn't be any leaves left. But there were. Yay!

Fresca Pizza & Pasta, Toronto, ON

There was an article in Saturday’s Toronto Star about pizza in Toronto and the author raved about Fresca Pizza & Pasta on College Street (just west of Spadina). It’s in the same location as the old Massimo’s whose pizza slices I loved loved loved. I didn’t know that Massimo’s best pizza maker had opened Fresca so when I read that, I knew I had to check it out today since I was in the area.

I got here just before the pepperoni pizza came out of the oven so my slice was fresh and hot. And it was a tasty slice! I’ll be back!

Knitted scarf

I just finished knitting a scarf.

I used a skein of Loops & Threads Sweet Snuggles Lite super bulky (#6) and the colour is coastal dot.

It’s about 5 feet long and warm and snuggly. I cast on 25 stitches and did 8 rows of garter stitch, then stocking stitch, then finished off with 8 rows of garter stitch.
